Hatta

Some 110km (68 miles) inland from Dubai, rural Hatta 4 [map] is a small enclave of Dubai territory, surrounded by land belonging to Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, and neighbouring country Oman. In Hatta itself, when you reach the roundabout with an open-sided fortress in the middle, either turn left for Hatta Fort Hotel, or right for Hatta Heritage Village and the road to the dam.

Prehistoric Hatta

The village of Hatta is the only part of the Dubai emirate outside the city, and was traditionally a quiet mountain retreat for residents from Dubai in search of cooler and drier climate during the hot and humid summers. Archaeological finds have revealed that the fertile mountain valleys around Hatta were first inhabited more than 4,000 years ago, during the Bronze Age. Excavations in the Juma valley have uncovered an ancient settlement and tombs similar to those found in Umm Al Nar, Abu Dhabi, dating from c.2,000–2,500BC. Finds from the site are displayed at Dubai Museum (for more information, click here). There is very little to see in the village, except the Heritage Village and a small hill-top park, but it is nice just to see life here going at a very different pace compared to Dubai.
